Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is at the heart of this research project. This non-destructive method for three-dimensional imaging is based on white light interferometry and enables high-resolution images with an isotropic resolution of up to 1 µm in transparent and semi-transparent materials.
In the entire wavelength range from UV to IR the “OpenLab for OCT” provides innovative and flexible metrological tools to answer relevant questions of biomedicine and non-destructive testing. At the same time, the OpenLab sees itself as a networking platform with other research institutions as well as the industry for an intensive exchange and sustainable research transfer.

In addition to applications of OCT in medical imaging such as histology and ophthalmology, the focus of the OpenLab for OCT in Jena is on non-destructive material testing, in particular of microcracks in glass and ceramics – so-called subsurface damage (SSD) – in optics production.
