DFG strengthens knowledge-oriented research at universities of applied sciences.

Great success for the Ernst Abbe University of Applied Sciences Jena (EAH Jena): The German Research Foundation (DFG) is funding the interdisciplinary project “TOOLS – Tailored Optics for Life Sciences Engineering” with a total of 5 million euros. The funding is provided as part of the new Research Impulse program, which was developed specifically for universities of applied sciences (HAW) and aims to strengthen knowledge-oriented research in this higher education sector.

Over a period of five years, the project will research tailored optical technologies that can be used in biomedical manipulation and diagnostics. These include multifunctional micro- and macro-optical components as well as innovative biophotonic processes – for example, for the detection of bio-nanoparticles or for endoscopic diagnostics of middle ear infections.

TOOLS is led by an experienced team at the EAH Jena: Prof. Dr. Robert Brunner, Prof. Dr. Jens Bliedtner, Prof. Dr. Maria Dienerowitz and Prof. Dr. Iwan Schie, together with Prof. Dr. Orlando Guntinas-Lichius from the Department of Otorhinolaryngology at Jena University Hospital, are leading the project. This close interdisciplinary collaboration combines expertise in optics, photonics, medical technology, and clinical research.

TOOLS not only underscores the research strength of Jena University Hospital (EHAS), but also highlights the enormous potential of universities of applied sciences to contribute to cutting-edge research in Germany.
